This week, we’re celebrating Compost Week – a time to reflect on how we can give back to the Earth by transforming our kitchen scraps into rich, nourishing soil. At V-Giyan, we believe that just as food nourishes our bodies, compost nourishes the land, completing a cycle of sustainability and respect for nature.
Did you know that nearly 40% of food waste can be composted instead of ending up in landfills? Traditional Punjabi cooking, with its emphasis on whole foods and fresh ingredients, naturally minimizes waste. But even the best kitchens produce scraps-vegetable peels, fruit rinds, and herb stems. Instead of throwing them away, why not turn them into black gold?
We compost the waste from the kitchen at the L.O.V.E Farm which is an organisation set up by the founder of the new vision for V-Giyan.
Composting in Three Simple Steps:Collect – Gather fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and plant-based waste in a bin.
Layer – Balance your greens (food scraps) with browns (dry leaves, cardboard) to create the perfect compost mix.
Turn & Wait – Aerate your compost occasionally, and in a few months, you’ll have nutrient-rich soil for your garden!
Not only does composting reduce waste, but it also enriches the soil, helping you grow your own fresh, organic vegetables—just like the ones we use in our dishes!
This Compost Week, let’s take a step towards sustainability together. Start your composting journey today and be part of a greener future!
