Embracing Our Strengths and Building for the Future | | Dear Brother Knights, | | | | A friend recently shared with me that he’s considering retirement. He has financial security but finds no fulfillment in his job anymore. Meanwhile, others work tirelessly in jobs they may not love but don’t have the option to leave. Some lose their jobs and are forced to start over entirely. In many ways, our role as members of the Knights of Columbus and St. Rose Parish is similar. There are many challenges—financial struggles, lack of time, personal obligations, and even faith itself—that can pull us away. But just like a job, we don’t always realize what we have until it’s gone, and once lost, it’s incredibly difficult to rebuild. It is up to us to keep our Church, School, and Council vibrant and thriving.
Upcoming Events & Fundraisers - St. Rose Auction – March 1st : This vital fundraiser directly benefits our school. Thank you to everyone who contributes time, donations, and support to make it a success. - Lenten Fish Fries : Our Friday Fish Fries are a great way to support our council while bringing the community together. Join us for delicious meals and fellowship! - Building & Facility Updates ️: The concrete work on the parking lot is complete. Upstairs bathroom renovations have officially begun. Casino Night for the Disc Golf Course was a huge success! The course is set to open this spring. - 5th Sunday Breakfast – March 30th : After the 7:00 AM Mass, enjoy a full hot breakfast for just $5 per person. Awards will be presented to winners of the Essay Contest and Basketball Free Throw Contest. We will also present a donation to Pony Bird from the Tootsie Roll Drive proceeds.
As we enter the Lenten season, I encourage each of you to grow in faith and love for God and one another. May this be a time of reflection, renewal, and deeper commitment to the values we uphold as Knights of Columbus.
Fraternally, John Ziegler, Grand Knight

Lent: A Season of Reflection, Sacrifice, and Renewal
| | Lent is one of the most significant seasons in the Catholic Church, marking 40 days of spiritual preparation leading up to the celebration of Easter Sunday. It is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, calling Catholics to deepen their faith, repent for past sins, and grow closer to God. The season of Lent is inspired by the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, where He was tempted by Satan but remained steadfast in His devotion to God (Matthew 4:1-11). Just as Jesus prepared for His public ministry through fasting and prayer, Lent calls on us to reflect on our spiritual lives and prepare our hearts for the Resurrection of Christ. The Meaning of LentThe word “ Lent” comes from an Old English term meaning “ springtime” or “ lengthening of days”, symbolizing renewal and growth. It is a time to focus on repentance, conversion, and embracing the mercy of God. During Lent, Catholics are encouraged to follow three core practices: 1. Prayer Lent is a time to strengthen our relationship with God through prayer. Many take this opportunity to: - Attend daily Mass or Eucharistic Adoration. - Pray the Rosary more frequently. - Read and reflect on Scripture daily. - Participate in the Stations of the Cross, a devotion that commemorates Christ’s suffering and crucifixion.
Prayer allows us to seek God’s guidance, grow in faith, and prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter. 2. Fasting Fasting during Lent is a way to detach from worldly comforts and discipline ourselves spiritually. Catholics are required to: - Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (one full meal and two smaller meals, with no snacks). - Abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. Many also choose to give up something they enjoy, such as sweets, social media, or other indulgences, as an act of sacrifice and devotion. Fasting reminds us to rely on God, rather than material comforts, and helps us practice self-discipline and gratitude. 3. Almsgiving Giving to those in need is a fundamental part of Lent. Acts of charity and service help us grow in compassion and generosity. Some ways to practice almsgiving include: - Donating food, clothing, or money to those in need. - Volunteering at a soup kitchen or food pantry. - Participating in parish fundraisers for charitable causes. - Contributing to Lenten giving programs like the Knights of Columbus 40 Cans for Lent Food Drive.
By helping those in need, we imitate Christ’s love and sacrifice for others. Important Lenten Dates for 2025Lent follows the liturgical calendar, beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding with Holy Week, which leads into Easter.
- Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday): March 4, 2025
- Ash Wednesday (Start of Lent): March 5, 2025
- Palm Sunday: April 13, 2025
- Holy Thursday: April 17, 2025
- Good Friday: April 18, 2025
- Holy Saturday: April 19, 2025
- Easter Sunday (The Resurrection of Christ): April 20, 2025
These dates mark significant moments in the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ, reminding us of His ultimate sacrifice for our salvation. Join Us for Lenten Fish Fries at the Hall! One of the best traditions of Lent is coming together as a community for our Lenten Fish Fries, held every Friday during Lent at the Knights of Columbus Hall. This is more than just a meal—it’s a time for fellowship, reflection, and supporting our council’s charitable works. Bring your family and friends, enjoy a delicious fish dinner, and share in the spirit of Lent. Location: Knights of Columbus Hall Fridays during Lent Dine-in or Carryout Available Your participation helps support our parish and outreach efforts, making this a meaningful way to observe the season. Living Lent Beyond the 40 DaysLent isn’t just about temporary sacrifices—it’s about lifelong spiritual transformation. The habits we build during Lent— prayer, fasting, and charity—should extend beyond Easter and shape the way we live as faithful disciples of Christ. As we prepare for the joy of Easter, let us renew our hearts, strengthen our faith, and commit to growing in holiness. May this Lenten season bring you closer to God, deeper in faith, and more aware of His boundless mercy. |
