From the Grand Knight’s Desk:
January's Journey Ahead

Brother Knights and Ladies,

January is named for the Roman mythological god Janus. He had a head with 2 faces. One looking back and one looking forward. In the cold month of January, we are restricted indoors. There is plenty of time to reflect on the year past and the new one that lies ahead. The business of the holiday season behind us, we can take stock of our accomplishments and failures of the past year, and plan to improve in the new one. The challenges that our council faced last year will fade in memory, as we continue to strive to make our hall a vibrant welcoming place in the new year, as we have for so many years before.

One easy way to help our cause in the new year would be to join the weekly Queen of Hearts raffle. A weekly donation of $5 gets you a chance to win thousands. Everyone dreams of winning the lottery. Our raffle will never make millions, but if every member purchased a ticket, it would be in the tens of thousands. That would be a nice payout for the winner and help out with the operation of our facilities. It is simple to do and you can be automatically enrolled each week if you choose. Check the website for more details.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday season. Thank you to everyone who has participated or helped out in the past year. I look forward to seeing you at our activities in the new year.

Fraternally Yours,
John Ziegler, Grand Knight

Embracing the New Year with Columbia Ann’s Spirit

Ladies,

We did not have a meeting in December. With the Christmas season upon us and all the hustle and bustle of shopping, baking and preparing for gathering of family and friends, we need to remember to be thankful for our Church and faith during this holiday season.

I have asked the Church and School to help buy another small 5 foot warmer which is used for the Auction and St. Rose Picnic. As of today, I have not received a reply if they are able to help out. I will keep you up to date.

January's meeting we will be focusing on rewriting the Bi-Laws and making updates.
Thank you to all the officers and ladies who attend the meetings. We had a busy year with items that needed replacing in the kitchen in 2023. Hoping 2024 is a great year for us.

We had a very successful Knights Little Elves Christmas Party for a lot of children in need. I cannot thank everyone enough who came to help out with the set up, the day of the party and clean up. We added craft tables this year. Thanks to Madison Lewis for taking charge of this project. We had a lot of personal shoppers, so thanks to a lot of the teachers from local schools for helping out. We helped families from St. Rose, Athena, Sunrise, De Soto Junior High, Vineland, De Soto Food Pantry. We had service ponies thanks to Bill Polley, who is also played Santa. We also offered hair cuts by Tammy Schrand Casey and games hosted by Mary Ann Poncet. Our Knights and friends in the kitchen cooked burgers and hot dogs for the children to enjoy. Thank you, thank you, for all you who helped out so much! Looking forward to a successful 2024 Christmas for these children who need our help. Let the shopping begin for 2024. Come on sales.

Have a safe and wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Wishing you a happy new year,
Vicky Moss, President

Spiritual Report
One evening I was going back from a supermarket. As I have approached my car, I noticed that some person came and stood beside me. He was the one that could be considered as a bum. It seemed that he had no car, no home and no job. I expected that he will ask me for money, but he did not do that, he only said: "Your car is very nice."

After several moments of silence I have replied: "Thanks", and then the inner voice told me: "Ask him if he needs help." After a short hesitation I have asked him, if he needs any help. His respond was astonishing, I will never forget those simple three words that I heard from him: "Don't we all?"

It was a true discovery to me. I needed help. Although I had money and a place to sleep, but I recognized that I needed help too. Then I have opened my wallet and gave him enough money to get a meal and some shelter for a day.

Suddenly I understood that no matter how much money, achievements, luxury things do we have, we all need help. And on the other hand, no matter how poor you are, how many material problems you have, you still might offer your help to others, you still might be giving. Even it's just a nice word, you can give that and it can be priceless to other person.

Maybe that man was just a homeless stranger, but to me he was more than that. Maybe he was sent by the Highest Loving Power personally to me, to open my eyes, to show me that there is one thing, among all other values and achievements, which is very important and irreplaceable for each and every person.

Actually, it is a true gift and it is called Giving.

Humor Me: Circus
A husband and wife who work for the circus go to an adoption agency looking to adopt a child, but the social workers there raise doubts about their suitability.

So the couple produce photos of their 50-foot motor home, which is clean and well maintained and equipped with a beautiful nursery.

The social workers are satisfied by this but then raise concerns about the kind of education a child would receive while in the couple’s care.

The husband puts their mind at ease, saying, “We’ve arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin, and computer skills.”

Next though, the social workers express concern about a child being raised in a circus environment.

This time the wife explains, “Our nanny is a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet.”

The social workers are finally satisfied and ask the couple, “What age child are you hoping to adopt?”

The husband says, “It doesn’t really matter, as long as the kid fits in the cannon.
