| A June Reflection | | As we step into the heart of summer, June offers us a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the values that unite us as Knights, parishioners, and families. This month, we celebrate both Flag Day and Father’s Day—two holidays that honor the strength of our country and the strength of those who guide us.
Flag Day reminds us of the freedoms we are blessed to enjoy and the sacrifices made to protect them. It’s a time to reflect on our duty to serve, not only our community and council but our nation, with pride and integrity.
Father’s Day gives us a chance to thank the men in our lives—fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and spiritual fathers—who lead with quiet strength, faith, and love. Their example of service, leadership, and devotion reflects the very foundation of the Knights of Columbus.
As the days grow longer and our calendars fill with service projects, celebrations, and summer fun, may we stay rooted in what matters most: faith, fellowship, and family. Let this season be one of unity, joy, and purpose—together, we are stronger.
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." — 1 Peter 4:8–10 | |

Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Message from the Grand Knight | | It has been an honor to serve as the Grand Knight of Council 1185 for the past four years. As I look at the portraits of the Grand Knights who came before me—men who led this council for over a century—I'm humbled to be counted among them. This role has been interesting, challenging, and incredibly rewarding, with many responsibilities that I did not take lightly.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Past Grand Knights who shared their wisdom, advice, and support during my time in office: Tony Vallo, Marvin Williams, Todd Milner, Keith Missey, Bob Roth, and Larry Krodinger. A special thanks to our District Deputy, Mike Ward, whose partnership and guidance were instrumental throughout my term.
I also want to thank each and every one of you who work tirelessly to make our council the vibrant, active, and impactful organization it is. Through your efforts—whether you help behind the scenes, run events, or simply show up—we have made a lasting difference in our Church and community.
This year, we will be honored with the Star Council Award, the highest achievement given by our Order. That recognition belongs to all of you. Thank you to everyone who invited new members to join this year—your commitment to growing our brotherhood is what made this possible.
At our May meeting, we held officer nominations. Since there was only one nominee per position, a motion was made and passed to elect the officers by acclamation. Congratulations to our next Grand Knight, David Kennedy, and to the newly elected officers who will lead us in the upcoming fraternal year.
Also at the meeting, we voted to make a $500 donation to Birthright for their Mother’s Day card fundraiser. In addition, two $500 scholarships were awarded to David Lueck and Payton O'Shea, graduating seniors from De Soto High School. These scholarships were funded by proceeds from the Kay Schutte Memorial Cornhole Tournament.
Our meeting room air conditioning also received an upgrade. SMCI generously donated a condensing unit with compatible refrigerant, saving us the cost of replacing the entire indoor system. Their support is deeply appreciated.
A quick update from the State Convention: an additional $1 per dues-paying member will now be assessed by the State Council to help cover travel expenses for District Deputies. Our District Deputy, Mike Ward, spoke against this measure, but it ultimately passed. On a lighter note, the State has also added a Knights Day at the Ballpark. Join us for a Cardinals game on Sunday, July 27th at 1:15 PM—more details will be shared in this newsletter.
Serving as Grand Knight has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I hope you are all as proud as I am to be part of Council 1185. Thank you for your support, your friendship, and your dedication.
Fraternally, John Ziegler, Grand Knight

Blooming with Purpose: Columbia Anns Spring Update | | Spring is here, and with everything blooming around us, we’re feeling refreshed and ready for another year of fellowship and service.
We recently held elections for the 2025–2026 fiscal year, and we’re pleased to announce the following officers:
President: Vicky Moss Vice President: Traci Hardin Secretary: Terri Sprouse Treasurer: Belinda Pelican Trustees: Debbie Roth and Jenn Missey
We’ve been asked by the men to contribute half the cost of a new water softener, which is approximately $2,100. In addition, the dishwasher is in need of repairs, estimated at $1,000. We will also donate $300 toward this year’s fireworks display, as long as funds allow.
Currently, we only have two catering events scheduled for September. Our primary sources of income this year will be Bingo and the concession stand. We’re always looking for volunteers to help with Bingo—even once a month or every other month would be a big help! We’d especially love to see a few more of our Knights volunteer to cook burgers at Bingo. Typical shift hours are from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
As the days get sunnier and the flowers and trees come to life, take time to enjoy the beauty around you.
Wishing everyone a safe and joyful Memorial Day weekend!
Yours truly, Vicky Moss

Clubroom Corner: Kicking Off the Season with Fellowship and Fun | | First, a big thank you to everyone who helped make our Derby Day celebration a success! The energy was great, the food was delicious, and everyone had a blast. Your support and volunteer spirit never go unnoticed.
As we roll into summer, we know schedules get busy with vacations, sports, and kids being out of school. But don’t forget, the Clubroom is here and open for you! Whether you're looking for a quick drink with friends, a fun Friday night, or just a place to unwind—we’ve got you covered. Bring the kids and let them enjoy the playground, throw a round of disc golf, or stop by on Friday nights for concession stand food while you watch the horseshoe league in action.
We grow and thrive from seeing families spend time together here, making memories and enjoying all our facility has to offer.
Mark your calendars now for our big Independence Day Bash! Join us for an all-day celebration with water slides, bounce houses, games, live music, food, drinks, and a fantastic fireworks show. This event is open to members and the community, and it’s one of our favorite days of the year to celebrate freedom and fellowship together.
Happy Summer!
As always, we appreciate your continued support and look forward to spending the season with you. |

BINGO | | Our council has sponsored bingo for over 50 years. We pay rent for hall and all our advertising costs; all other money goes to not-for-profit charities.
Note: We must follow the State of Missouri gaming rules. That controls how we can spend our money. At one time there were 7 bingos in De Soto area and now we are the last one. We have a very steady base of bingo players who faithfully come week after week.
Note: That any 6-month member can work bingo after you have state approval by the Mo Gaming/bingo division. Let Larry know if you want to join us.
Wednesday night bingo is one of our major fund raisers, that supports our charitable giving as part of our dedication to help others. We donate to these organizations: St Vincent de Paul, St Rose of Lima Parish, De Soto Food Pantry, Pony Bird Home, Sunnyhill Assisted Living, American Legion Baseball, St Pius X HS Scholarship fund, Development Disabilities of Jefferson County, Veterans Affairs and others.
Blacklight Bingo is Nov. 8 this year; we also give to our charities from these proceeds. We hold a silent auction at blacklight bingo. We are in need of some LIKE NEW items donated for this silent auction. You can drop at bingo or SMCI: 1661 Veterans Dr.
Another reason for our GREAT success is our food prepared by Vicky Moss and the Columbia Anns.
I want to thank all the dedicated workers who give their time to making things run smoothly and without them we could not have bingo. The workersare as follows:Bob Roth, Debbie Roth, Greg Cobb,Jenny Missey, Joe Missey, frank Wilson, Ann Oberle, David Sprous, Terri Sprous,Cory Sprous, Todd Milner, Jennifer Penaloza, Tony Vallo and Larry Krodinger. Thank you all again for your dedication.
Sincerely and God Bless All, Larry Krodinger Bingo Chairman

Fish Fry Recap: We Fried, We Served, We Conquered | | Another Lenten season has come and gone—and so have 2,338 delicious fish dinners. Thanks to the amazing effort of our volunteers (and possibly some divine help with the fryers), we wrapped up this year’s Fish Fry with a net profit of $10,973.84!
Whether you were elbow-deep in coleslaw, sneaking hush puppies in the kitchen, running orders like a pro, or just stopped by to offer a hand and a smile—thank you. It truly takes a village (with good aprons and a high tolerance for grease).
To everyone who helped out—even just once—you are appreciated more than you know. We couldn’t have done it without you.
And if you didn’t get a chance to help this year but want to join the fishy fun next Lent, we’d love to have you! Reach out to me—no experience necessary, just a sense of humor and a willingness to serve (and maybe a good fish pun or two).
With heartfelt thanks (and slightly oil-scented clothes), Tiffany Viehman

| Pentecost: The Fire That Unites Us | Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate Pentecost—a powerful moment in the Church’s history when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, filling them with courage, wisdom, and the ability to speak in many tongues. This miraculous event transformed a small group of believers into the foundation of the Church we know today.
Pentecost reminds us that faith isn’t something we keep quietly to ourselves—it’s a flame meant to be shared. The Holy Spirit continues to move among us, calling each of us to use our unique gifts in service to God and one another.
In our council, our parish, and our community, we see Pentecost come to life when we work together with joy and unity. Whether we’re serving meals, planning events, or lending a helping hand, that same Spirit fuels our mission.
This Pentecost, may we open our hearts to renewal and be bold in our faith, just as the Apostles were. May we carry the fire forward—together.

| A Father’s Day Salute: Honoring the Men Who Lead with Love | In June, we pause to honor the fathers in our lives—men who lead not with loud words, but with quiet strength, steady love, and unwavering commitment. Fathers come in many forms: dads, stepdads, grandfathers, godfathers, uncles, spiritual fathers, and father figures who step in and show us the way. They teach us to be brave, to be kind, to show up, and to live with integrity. As Knights, we look up to these men—not just for their hard work and dedication, but for the values they pass on through their example. They remind us that true leadership begins in the home, is rooted in faith, and extends to how we treat everyone we meet. This Father’s Day, we offer our deepest thanks to the men who have helped raise, shape, and guide us. And we say a prayer for those who are no longer with us, but whose influence still lights our path. "The righteous man walks in his integrity—blessed are his children after him." — Proverbs 20:7
To all fathers and father figures: thank you for all you do.
