Faith, Freedom, and Fellowship: A July Reflection

As fireworks light up the sky and flags wave high, July reminds us of the incredible gift of freedom—and the responsibility that comes with it. For Knights, this season isn't just about celebration; it’s a time to reflect on the values that unite us: our faith, our country, and our commitment to one another.

From parish events and family gatherings to community outreach and summer service, we are called to lead with purpose and come together in true fellowship. Whether you're flipping burgers at a fundraiser, praying for a neighbor, or simply lending a hand, every act of charity keeps the flame of our mission burning bright.
As we honor our nation's independence, let’s also recommit ourselves to the deeper freedom that comes from living a life of faith, service, and brotherhood.

“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become servants to one another.” — Galatians 5:13

Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Purpose: A Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,

First, I want to extend a special thank you to John Ziegler, who has provided outstanding leadership over the past four years. His guidance and commitment helped lead our council to earn the Star Council Award—a remarkable achievement that reflects his dedication and your collective support.

I also want to thank each and every one of you for the warm welcome you’ve shown to Joan, our family, and me. Every time we leave a council event or spend time in the clubroom, we’re reminded that transferring to Council 1185 was the right decision. This truly is a tremendous place for fellowship, family, and faith. Thank you for embracing us.

It is an honor to be elected as your Grand Knight, and I am humbled by the opportunity to serve. I know I have big shoes to fill, and I’ll do my very best to live up to the high standard that has been set.

As we move into this new fraternal year, I want you to know I believe in the saying: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." This council already has an incredible group of volunteers who work together seamlessly—and I want to see that continue and grow.

We’ll explore a few new ideas, try out some fresh activities, and look for ways to expand our reach to even more local charities. But above all, my goal is to support what makes this council strong: our unity, our generosity, and our shared commitment to service.

Thank you again for your trust. I look forward to what we’ll accomplish together in the months ahead.

God bless you and your families,
David Kennedy
Grand Knight

Summer Notes from the Columbia Anns

Dear Anns,

Summer is flying by as we approach the Fourth of July! If you don’t have plans, we invite you to join us for the Independence Day Celebration on June 28th at the KC Hall. This year, the Columbia Anns were able to contribute $500 toward the fireworks display. While it's less than we hoped, we're optimistic that with better fundraising next year, we’ll be able to contribute even more.

Catering has been slow this year, with only two events scheduled in September, so we’re looking for other ways to support our programs.

Looking ahead, we voted to host a New Year’s Eve Dance, featuring Dennis Gillam’s new band, The Voices. Tickets will be $20 per person, and the evening will include a cash bar, beer, setups, and a nacho bar. Advertising and ticket sales will begin soon, so spread the word!

We continue to need help in the kitchen at Bingo nights, especially with frying hamburgers. A big thank-you to Ed Schutte and Andy Hahn for stepping up! Gentlemen, we only need help from 4:15 PM to 7:30 PM, so even one night a month would make a big difference.

There will be no official meeting in July, but we will host an initiation dinner at 6:00 PM at the KC Hall. The Columbia Anns will provide the meat; please bring a side dish to share. Family is welcome and encouraged to attend.

If you're available, we could also use some help during the Disc Golf Tournament on July 5th and 6th. We’ll be preparing four meals over the weekend, and every extra set of hands makes the work lighter.

Wishing everyone a safe and joyful Fourth of July!

Yours truly,
Vicky Moss
President

Help Make It Happen – Car Show Volunteers Needed!

Our 2025 KC Car Show is fast approaching, and we need all hands on deck to make it another incredible success!

Whether you can spare an hour or the whole day, there’s a spot for everyone—parking, registration, raffle sales, setup/cleanup, food service, and more. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and we can’t do it without your help.

A volunteer sign-up sheet will beposted in the Clubroom—please take a moment to stop by and add your name. Grab a friend or bring the family and be part of a day full of cars, community, and camaraderie.

Let’s show everyone what Council 1185 is made of!
United in Freedom: A Reflection for Independence Day
As we gather with family and friends this month for fireworks, cookouts, and community celebrations, it's important to remember the deeper meaning behind Independence Day. July 4th is not just about festivities—it’s a moment to honor the courage and conviction of those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

As Knights and Columbian Anns, we are called to live out our freedoms with purpose. We are free to worship, to serve, and to support one another—not just because it’s allowed, but because it’s right. Let us never take these gifts for granted.

Our local celebrations—like the annual event at the KC Hall—are a perfect example of how freedom and faith go hand in hand. As we laugh, share meals, and enjoy fireworks, we’re not just celebrating a country—we’re strengthening the bonds of our community.

So this year, as we wave the flag and sing the anthem, let us also say a prayer for our nation. May we continue to grow in unity, peace, and service to others, guided by the very values our Order was founded upon.

Halfway There: Mid-Year Renewal and Recommitment
Can you believe we’re halfway through the year already?

July is a natural time to slow down, soak up the summer sun, and take a deep breath. But it’s also the perfect moment for spiritual reflection and personal recommitment. Just as we often set goals in January, July offers us a second chance—a mid-year reset.

Ask yourself:
  • Am I living out my faith in daily actions?
  • Have I taken time to volunteer, support my parish, or reach out to someone in need?
  • Is there a small change I can make today that would have a big impact over time?

As we begin a new fraternal year and welcome new leadership, let’s recommit ourselves to the mission we all share: charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.
Whether it’s signing up to help at the car show, attending a meeting, saying yes to a service opportunity, or simply showing up with a willing heart—we all have something to give.

Let’s finish this year stronger than we started—together.

Thank YOU!
A big thank you to all of our members, families, and volunteers who continue to support our council and community through service, prayer, and fellowship. Whether you lend a hand behind the scenes, show up for events, or offer your prayers—you are appreciated more than you know.
